In my opinion, backlinks are one of the most important aspects of a good SEO campaign. The more links pointed to your site, the higher that the search engines will rank your site. But not just any backlinks. You need quality links from high PR (page rank) sites that are relevant to your content. In other words, if your website is geared toward "dog training" you do not want links from websites that are geared toward wedding cakes. You would want to specifically find websites with content on dog training.
I will explain a few ways to get backlinks. One is to do a search on Google for your keyword, in this case we will keep using the "dog training" niche. Simply search for "dog training blogs". Then, go to the websites that are of high page rank and post a comment on them. Just one comment, do not spam them. Write something intelligent, something relevant to dog training. Do not leave just a sentence. Write something informative, and also would be a good idea to read through the content on the website you are visiting and comment on the posts found there.
Try to leave a good impression with the author. At most blogs, the admin must approve your comment before it is published, so if your comment is not insightful it probably will not even make it on the page. Most blogs have a box to leave your website address in, that will connect with your name when the comment is published, in the form of a hyperlink. You can also look for the resource box.
